Special Education Services
Flushing Community Schools offers a full continuum of programs and services to eligible students. Michigan law requires that all students who have disabilities (to the extent that the disability results in significant interference with school performance) be provided with special education programs and services. The specialized services are to be planned through the Individual Education Program (IEP) by a multidisciplinary team. Programs and services are offered for students birth to age twenty six with the following twelve handicapping conditions:
- Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
- Cognitively Impaired (CI)
- Early Childhood Developmental Delay (ECDD)
- Emotionally Impaired (EI)
- Hearing Impaired (HI)
- Specific Learning Disability (SLD)
- Other Health Impaired (OHI)
- Physically Impaired (PI)
- Speech and Language Impaired (SLI)
- Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
- Visually Impaired (VI)
- Severely Multiply Impaired (SXI)
Flushing Community Schools offer a variety of programs in all buildings. Every school has a team of professional educators who work with the special needs of children. Most of our students with an eligibility spend the majority of their school day engaged in the general education curriculum.
With consideration of federal guidelines and state requirements, Specific Learning Disability eligibility is evaluated using a Pattern of Strengths and Weaknesses for all buildings and grade levels. This process is based on both assessment and review of achievement scores and performance in a variety of academic areas. Please review the GISD SLD Guidelines for Genesee County.
