2013-2014 Outstanding Scholars

Megan Valley

With a 4.114 GPA, Megan Elaine Valley is graduating as valedictorian of her class.  She is an AP Scholar with Distinction.  Megan plans on attending the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana where she will study English and business. Megan served as President of the National Honor Society.  She is the daughter of Matthew and Susan Valley.   Megan attended Seymour Elementary. 

Adrienne Fontan

Adrienne Nicole Fontan is the daughter of Eric Fontan and Valerie Fontan.  Adrienne attended Central Elementary. She earned a 4.068 GPA, and plans to study physics or biophysics at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where she has been awarded the U of M Regents Merit Scholarship and the U of M College of Literature, Science and the Arts Scholarship.  Adrienne has been awarded the Winterguard International Scholarship and the Edgar L. Cornwell Scholarship. Adrienne earned the Greatest Contribution to the Colorguard Award. She also earned six 1st Division State Solo and Ensemble Ratings. 

Rebecca Hrit

The daughter of David and Susan Hrit, Rebecca Therese Hrit attended Central Elementary.  She has a 4.060 GPA and will attend Frederik Meijer Honors College at Grand Valley State University, majoring in pre-medicine/biology, and Spanish.  Grand Valley State University has presented Rebecca with the Award of Distinction Faculty Scholarship and the Award of Excellence Scholarship.  Rebecca has also been awarded scholarships from the following local organizations: the Flushing Book Club, the Flushing Alumni Association, the Flushing Lions Club Scholarship, and the Flushing Rotary Club. Rebecca was named Most Valuable Player for both the Carman-Ainsworth/Flushing Varsity Swim Team and for Flushing’s Varsity Competitive Cheer Team.

Kirsten Cussans

Kirsten Marie Cussans is the daughter of Dean and Sheri Cussans.  She will graduate with a 4.036 GPA.  She attended Seymour Elementary.  Kirsten has been awarded the Kettering Trustee Scholarship from Kettering University, where she plans on pursuing an education in chemical engineering. Kirsten will be performing the co-op part of her Kettering experience at Corning. Kirsten was also awarded the Michigan Competitive Scholarship, the Roberta Reed McWilliams Scholarship.  In 2012, Kirsten was named Most Outstanding Junior in the Marching Band and the Most Outstanding Woodwind in the Marching Band for 2013.

Andrew Carle

Andrew Martin Carle attended Seymour Elementary.  While at FHS, Andrew earned a 4.022 GPA.  He will attend Oakland University and pursue a degree in electrical engineering.  Oakland University awarded Andrew the Distinguished Scholar Award and the Trustees Center for Multicultural Initiatives Award.  Andrew also earned the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans Award. The Rotary Club of Flushing named Andrew Student of the Month and has awarded him their Rotary Club Scholarship. Andrew earned his Eagle Scout Award in September of 2011. He is the son of Carla Joan Carle and the late Andy Carle.

Meghan Morrow

Graduating with a 4.022 GPA, Meghan Brianna Morrow will attend Michigan State University to earn a degree in human biology.  The daughter of Matthew and Tamara Morrow, Meghan attended Central Elementary.  She was named Co-op Student of the Month in October 2013.  Megan has been awarded the McNally Scholarship.

Frances Sobolak

Former Seymour Elementary student Frances Ellie Sobolak will attend the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor this fall studying in the liberal arts field.  Frances earned a 4.022 GPA. The Rotary Club of Flushing named Frances Student of the Month.  She has been presented with the Barbara J. Yott Memorial Award for Marching Band. Frances is the daughter of Paul Sobolak and Bonnie Pounder. 

Benjamin Kearney

Benjamin Patrick Kearney will attend Kettering University to study mechanical engineering.  Benjamin attended Springview Elementary. He is the son of Todd and Colleen Kearney.  Benjamin is graduating with  a GPA of 4.017.  Kettering University has awarded him the Presidential Scholarship. He also received the McNally Scholarship.  He was named Most Outstanding Marching Band Member for 2013.  He earned his Eagle Scout Award. 

Madalyn Wendling

Madalyn Ann Wendling will graduate with a 4.017 GPA. She plans on attending Oakland University, where she has been awarded Oakland University’s Distinguished Scholar and Geographic Region Awards.    Madalyn will study computer engineering.  She is a Scholar Athlete and was named to Academic All-State for Volleyball in 2013. While at FHS, Madalyn was involved in Mu Alpha Theta, National Honor Society, and Wind Ensemble.   In 2013, Madalyn was named to Second Team All Saginaw Valley League for Volleyball. She attended Central Elementary and is the daughter of Matt and Susan Wendling.

Dalton White

The son of Ron and Susan White, Dalton Paul White attended Seymour Elementary. He has a 4.017 GPA and will be attending Michigan State University to study pre-med.  For the sport of football, Dalton was named to the Saginaw Valley All-Academic Team and to Academic All-State.  Dalton was the Varsity Football team captain and was also named Varsity Football’s Defensive Most Valuable Player. He was also on First Team All Conference Linebacker for the Saginaw Valley Conference.  Dalton has been awarded the McNally Scholarship.

Olivia Conover

Olivia Qiuju Conover, daughter of Brian and Laura Conover, is graduating with a 4.016 GPA.  While at Flushing High School, Olivia was named Number One Singles Big Nine Conference Champion in tennis and  Saginaw Valley League First Team, also in tennis.  She is a Scholar Athlete and has received Presidential and Honor Scholarships.  Olivia attended Seymour Elementary.  She plans on studying biochemistry/pre-med at Albion College. 

Sarah Bishop

Sarah Ilene Bishop attended Seymour Elementary.  She will be attending the University of Michigan-Flint. Her plans include studying pre-medicine.  Sarah has participated in Marching Band for five years, where she received the Barbara J. Yott Memorial Award for Marching Band. Sarah is the daughter of David and Barbara Bishop.  She is graduating with a 4.004 GPA.

Hannah Nettleton

Graduating with a 4.000 GPA, Hannah Mae Nettleton will attend the University of Michigan-Flint to study integrated sciences.  The daughter of Jack and Carrie Nettleton, Hannah attended Seymour Elementary.  She received the U of M Flint Academic Scholarship.
