Important Message from Superintendent Matt Shanafelt
April 18, 2023

Dear Flushing Community School Families,

This message is to let you know that earlier today, it was reported to us by a student and their parent that one of our Flushing Middle School students had brought what looked like a gun to school in their backpack. Upon immediate search of the locker and subsequent investigation by the middle school administrative team and the Flushing Township police department, it was discovered that this student did indeed bring what turned out to be a black toy gun into the middle school this morning. Parents, once again, please take this opportunity to remind your children that weapons, or toys that can be easily perceived to be weapons cannot be brought to school in any circumstance. As you have heard numerous times before, all safety and security protocols will be followed and students making these poor decisions will be subject to disciplinary action up to and including expulsion. We applaud those that came forward so that the incident could be quickly investigated, keeping all of our students and staff members safe. Please continue to say something when you see something, so that we can keep our schools safe for everyone. Thank you for your cooperation and effort in helping prevent these types of incidents from occurring in the future.  The safety of our students and staff remains our top priority, and we will continue to work alongside our local law enforcement to investigate any incident that threatens the safety and security of our students or staff members. We thank you for your help and understanding.

Message from Superintendent Matt Shanafelt
February 28, 2023

It is with a very heavy heart that we share with you the incredibly sad news that one of our Freshman Flushing High School students, Gavin Wofford, passed away unexpectedly earlier this afternoon. Although this was Gavin’s first year at Flushing High School, he built quality relationships and was well liked by the staff and students that knew him. Our deepest sympathy goes out to all of his family and friends.

A tragedy such as this creates a great deal of anxiety and emotional stress for everyone involved, and can be especially traumatic for young people. To help our students and staff members, school counselors and social workers throughout the district have been made available this afternoon. Our entire crisis team, including additional assistance from our ISD and local clergy, will be on hand in the coming days to help support anyone struggling with the grieving process.

It is hard to know exactly how young people will respond to an incident like this. We encourage you to talk to your children if they are aware of his passing through friends or social media; find out how they are feeling and let them share their concerns and feelings with you. Please know that our crisis team will continue to be available to all of our staff and students should they need any support in the coming days. Please keep Gavin’s family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Sincerely,
Matt Shanafelt

Important Message from Superintendent Matt Shanafelt
February 21, 2023

Late this morning, the administrative team at Flushing Middle School was made aware of a student that unfortunately brought a taser to school. Thanks to the students that quickly made their teachers aware, the student was quickly identified, and removed from the classroom setting by the FMS leadership team. The police were immediately involved and a coordinated investigation was completed by both the school district and the Flushing Township Police Department. All internal safety procedures and protocols were followed, and the student involved will face the appropriate discipline, up to and including possible expulsion from Flushing Community Schools, as well as face the appropriate criminal charges for bringing a weapon into the school setting.  We once again deeply appreciate the students that did the right thing by bringing it to our attention as soon as possible, so that we could take the appropriate measures to make sure our school buildings remain incredibly safe and positive places to be for all of our students and staff members. Thank you for your ongoing cooperation and effort in helping prevent these types of incidents from occurring in the future. The safety of our students and staff remains our top priority, and we will continue to work alongside our local law enforcement to investigate any situation that impacts the safety of our schools. We thank you for your help and understanding.

Important Message from Superintendent Matt Shanafelt
February 10, 2023

Late this morning, the administrative team at Flushing Middle School was made aware of a possible video threat that was posted to snapchat by an FMS student. The student was quickly identified, and removed from the classroom setting by the FMS leadership team. The police were immediately involved and a coordinated investigation was completed by both the school district and the Flushing Township Police Department. As is protocol, necessary backpacks and lockers were searched and the student was transported to the police department for further questioning. While the perceived threat was investigated thoroughly and deemed non-credible, it was shared by students to a number of different snapchat groups, causing a significant disruption to the school day. No matter how it is meant, it should be readily apparent to everyone at this point that any threat made against one of our school buildings will be taken extremely seriously, all protocols will be followed, including a thorough investigation, as well as the completion of a comprehensive risk assessment, appropriate school discipline, up to and including expulsion, and any appropriate criminal charges. I trust and appreciate that this message is prevalent and ongoing in all of our homes at this time, and hope that the rest of our students can once again learn from someone else's mistake and not repeat it themselves. We deeply appreciate the students that did the right thing by bringing it to our attention this morning, so that we could take the appropriate measures to make sure our school buildings remain incredibly safe and positive places to be for all of our students and staff members. Thank you for your ongoing cooperation and effort in helping prevent these types of incidents from occurring in the future. The safety of our students and staff remains our top priority, and we will continue to work alongside our local law enforcement to investigate any perceived threat made to the safety of our schools. We thank you for your help and understanding.

Employee and Educator of the Year
January 9, 2023

Every year, we look forward to announcing the recipients of the Educator of the Year and the School Employee of the Year awards to be recognized at the Flushing Area Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet.  This year’s recognition is scheduled for Thursday, February 16, 2023 at 6:00 pm, at Woodhaven Senior Community Center (5111 Woodlands Ct., Flint, MI 48532). With over 500 employees doing incredible things for students and families, it is difficult to select each year's recipient. This event allows us to highlight and celebrate two people, as they in turn represent our incredible staff.

We are happy to announce that this year’s recipient of the Educator of the Year award is High School Teacher Gina Hodgins. Since she was hired at the start of the 2004 school year, Gina has been an impactful English teacher and leader at Flushing High School. This year, she is teaching English 10 and English 11, as well as AARI (Adolescent Accelerated Reading Initiative). AARI seeks to increase academic literacy, helping high school students that are significantly behind grade level in their reading comprehension and critical thinking in informational text. These students have shown great growth under her leadership. They continue to make great strides, which positively impacts every aspect of their lives. She has faithfully and successfully served as the coach of our highly successful Robotics team for the last 8 years, while also serving as a guest administrator in the main office whenever there is a need. Throughout her career, she has also enthusiastically served as a Powderpuff coach and a class sponsor, further endearing herself to her students. She consistently goes above and beyond, doing whatever it takes to help our students be successful, and we are very grateful for her positive impact throughout our district. Congratulations Gina, and thank you for all that you do.

This year's Employee of the Year is Maria Czyzio. First and foremost, Maria has been instrumental in the success of and in the growth seen at Raider Virtual Academy (RVA). While enrollment has fluctuated between 35 students a few years ago to over 150 during the height of virtual learning, this program continues to meet the needs of so many students who are either behind in credit or just not finding success in the regular high school setting. Maria initially started with Flushing Schools doing community education work. She transitioned to an Adult Education teacher in 2009, and then in 2014 she started in RVA. Maria supports our RVA students both in person and online. Additionally, Maria administers all of our WIDA testing for students across the district that may qualify for English Learner (EL) support services, more commonly known as “English as a Second Language". She has also faithfully taken on a number of long-term guest teacher positions, which has helped the district successfully navigate many absences over the years. She is as helpful and as positive of a person as you will meet, and another wonderful example of an employee that goes above and beyond in service to our students and families.

These two represent all of us incredibly well, and I know that they gladly accept this acknowledgement on behalf of all the individuals doing incredible things every day in our district. We look forward to honoring both Gina and Maria at the Flushing Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Awards Banquet on February 16, 2023.

Banquet and ticket information can be found at this link. Please consider joining us at this event if you are able.

Please join us in congratulating both of these individuals for continuing to make a positive difference in our district!

From the Desk of Superintendent Matt Shanafelt
September 9, 2022

As we conclude our second successful week of school, I wanted to take this opportunity to remind you of two important things in support of keeping all of our kids safe and healthy in school. First, I urge all of our families to please continue to keep your students home from school if they are symptomatic, so that we can keep the maximum number of students in school every day, limiting the spread of Covid as much as possible within the school setting.

Second, while these important reminders are also happening directly with our students within our schools, it’s important that there is ongoing dialogue at home regarding threatening comments as well as responsible social media use. It is so important that all of our students realize the ramifications of their words and actions, whether intended as a joke or said in frustration. As a reminder, threatening comments of any kind may result in an extensive amount of time outside of school for the student  while the comprehensive process of investigation and internal and external risk assessments is followed, including the identification and implementation of all necessary interventions and supports, no matter how long it takes. Law enforcement will continue to be involved, with students facing strict disciplinary action, up to and including long term suspension and expulsion. It is my hope that through reminders at school, conversations at home, as well as ongoing awareness,  we can proactively avoid many of these situations this school year, allowing for all of our students to feel safe at school and focused on learning, while making the most of their school experience. Thank you for your ongoing partnership as we work together to make sure this is as positive and as successful a school year as our students and families deserve.
